The catechism school year begins in September and ends in May
The program is a combination of classes given at the parish by catechists and home study – parents with the children
At the parish, classes are given on Saturdays either morning or afternoon.
Six(6) levels (plus kindergarten) of catechism are offered that generally follow the children public school grade level – ex.: level 1 follows grade 1, level 2 follows grade 2, etc.
At completion of Level 3 the children are admitted to the sacrament of First Holy Communion and at completion of Level 6 to the sacrament of Confirmation.
Each students is provided with a workbook, a missal, and material required for study and follow the class at the parish and at home.
The children (students) are required to attend Sunday mass as part of their formation.
Home study progress and mass attendance is verified on a regular basis by catechist at the parish sessions. (Children may attend mass at a parish other than Holy Name of Jesus.)
Please consult the the Faith First office if your child has special needs.
All registration requests after July 31 are considered late.
You are in the privileged position of guiding your child in their decisions regarding Confirmation. One of the most important decisions will be the choice of your child’s sponsor. Please share the following information with your child as he/she prepares to make this important choice.
The Confirmation sponsor plays a special role not just in the celebration of Confirmation, but especially in the faith-life of the child. It is an honour to be chosen sponsor, but there is much more to the role than just being honoured. The sponsor is someone who acts as mentor, a “spiritual” parent, a “companion on the journey” of becoming a more committed and responsible Catholic Christian.
It is desirable that a godparent from Baptism be the Confirmation sponsor, provided the following criteria still applies:
Please note: Only one sponsor is necessary. A parent cannot serve as a sponsor since the unique role as parent is already the most important relationship possible with the child.
No, we do not expect your sponsor to be Mother Teresa! The role however, is an important one to be taken seriously. Take your time to make this choice in a meaningful way.
May the Holy Spirit guide you as you choose your sponsor!
Pray for this person, that moved by the same Spirit,
he or she will accept the role with a prayerful and enthusiastic response.
